Brutalist is full of surprises. The characters are not what you expect them to be—not in the way Scooby-Doo ends, but in the more subtle, gradual ways that real people discover themselves—they reveal themselves over time, in new contexts, or forced by circumstance. The horrors of World War II. Adrien Brody’s Laszlo, a Jewish architect who escaped the clutches of a bloody Europe, finds himself in the welcoming embrace of America—or encounters it—in a raucous opening sequence that literally reminds him that he was born from the Statue of Liberty.
What’s the lesson?
It becomes a journey where he constantly navigates the various horrors of life: existential, professional, familial, intimate—never taking his eyes off the prize of great achievement and never underestimating the value of that prize. Is it the disturbing revelation that his success was born not despite his injury, but because of it? Are we to blame for the abuse? Of the forces of culture, state, power, and those who govern them, creating our brutal legacies (and homelands)?
But there is no novel
Is the gasoline in our lives burned on the way to a place more meaningful? The film is charming, looks cool, and isn’t boring (did you hear it’s long?). It seems to be based on an old novel, a mysterious subject that I would like to understand some of the details that the film refuses to share. This aging man’s search for meaning becomes ours too.

And any better understanding of Laszlo’s arrival, his family’s machinations, his lack of country and roots, for better or worse, we are destined to build.
