Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t seen GoT yet, but are considering a marathon now that you’ve finished watching it. In this case, the consensus is accurate and reads: 1-6. Season: excellent. Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, epic set pieces worthy of a Hollywood movie, masterful acting, detailed plotting, genuine surprises, great, sparingly used soundtrack.
These seasons of GoT are definitely worth watching
Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the script and plot has dropped. There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent character portrayals and soap opera drama. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it may have its justification. Season 8: This jump will take you to depths you never thought possible. The script has become so amateurish that the still fantastic production quality is no longer enough to save it.
We lost our disbelief
If you liked Lost but were amazed at how bad the last season was, you’re on familiar ground here. The biggest problem with the last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. For fiction, that’s fatal. It also ruined the show’s story arcs to the point where there’s no point in rewatching the whole series. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies?
But it’s not the best show ever
Yes, the first six seasons are worth the later disappointments. It could have been, but if the show falters in the home stretch, it falls behind the following excellent shows that are more worthy of a marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons plus the movie) Breaking Bad
