In 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein enlists Dr. Euphronius to help him create a companion. They bring a murdered woman to life as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change. In January 2024, while accepting the Governors’ Awards (honorary/lifetime awards given by the same Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that gives out the Oscars), comedian John Mulaney jokingly told a story about being asked to record an audition for a small role in this film: «Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at me and thinking, ‘Oh, great. Here’s another damn stand-up comedian mocking us during our sacred rituals.’ Well, I should know, I’m not that much of an outsider. I’m quite the sought-after person in the film world. Christian Bale is in talks to play Jessie Buckley.» I know who one of those people is. «There’s no script at this time.» Okay, I’m listening. «Waiting, waiting for your response to the material. Use the attached sides to get involved in the tape and play the role of a young cop.» Okay, thanks. They really sent it to me. WME [entertainment agency William Morris Endeavor] sent me this, let me tell you. I’M NOT OFFERING YOUNG POLICEMAN. They’re giving me a chance to throw my hat in the ring.
