I will not deny that I think the film is really beautiful: the production design, the costumes, the props… and of course the lighting (congratulations to M. Bolduc) and many other little things helped to make it a wonderful experience for the eye, in my opinion.

.Now that the plot is as huge as with Dumas, with so many characters, names, narrations and the like, the authors had to trim, adapt, rewrite… betray, as often as necessary or critical. That goes without saying.
But why despise the original author’s choices (Dumas)?
Why betray the lessons he wanted to convey: Monte Cristo’s moral dilemma, his good nature. in general, his help to many and his unparalleled loyalty to all who were good to him or somehow deserved it? Why trade Haydée’s love for him for a stupid novel?
And what are we left with here?
Even Mercedes’s understanding of Monte Cristo’s actions and why she cannot be saved and why Albert must follow her is wonderful in the book… Pure show? I can assure you that is not what remains when you read it.
